New this week.

February 8th, 2007 by xamount

Two of the new games this week (Silent Hill 3 & NoCturne) are housed in the “Gruesome Games” GameTap Picks category. Personal tic: I can’t hear the word “gruesome” without it being in Dana Carvey’s voice from a 1989 SNL sketch about an acid-slinging cowboy named Josh Acid (”Didja have to use acid? It’s so… gruesome.”). Isn’t YouTube supposed to have this by now? So I can link it up and inflict the “gruesome” thing on all of you? Even the SNL Transcripts page for the episode is missing the script for this one sketch (but man, what a great episode it was).

Okay, back to games. Paddle Fighter is another one of those mysterious Japanese Sega online games (à la Pyramid Magic). And Neo-Geo Cup ‘98: The Road to Victory is at least worth a play just to see your guy try to angrily punch the ref in the face after a red card. SUPER PSYCHE UP!

p.s. Next week promises to be a fun one across the board. Stay tuned!

You forgot one! Wild Rides Waterpark Factory was on the new release tab today too.

    (…and the wait for X-Com continues… ;) )

  2. macnbc Says:

    Still no X-Com?

    This is getting depressing. :(

  3. xamount Says:

Yeah, just to reiterate something from before: games listed as “Coming Soon” are just that. Coming soon. Not necessarily in the next week or two. In many cases they will show up a week later, but some may take a while.

Think of the movie trailer model: big budget/big name titles tend to get teaser trailers in circulation earlier in the process than smaller fare. (And it’s not unheard of for a release date to get pushed out due to last-minute bug-fixes & testing reshoots.)

That said, if everything plays out right, next week should turn some frowns upside-down. Even if it’s only folks that pay attention to obscure things like the name of your ship in a certain UFO-y strategy game.

We’re gamers, teasing us like this is liable to make us wind up in a bell tower with a high powered rifle.

I believe I saw that on TV, so it MUST be true!

    ps.
Speaking of waiting, delays, and teasing… where’s our Saturn emu? :)

  5. xamount Says:

Totally with you, phorteetoo. When these jerks pull the same “no dates, just titles” stunt, I’m just as liable to hit that same tower. :)

  6. Morbo Says:

Puny humans! Tremble at the might of our mighty warr….oh wait, it’s still not out yet. Abort the mission :-(

  7. Manuel Says:

” Sega Saturn is still in the works. GameTap will launch with more than ten systems, with a few more supported later. Sega Saturn is the only one of those to be announced. ”

Yeah, thats from an interview 2 years ago. Don’t pull a Duke Nukem on us Gametap!

  8. dinah Says:

Heh. Duke Nukem. Nope, it’s definitely in the works. Promise.

  9. Jason Carver Says:

Sega Saturn cant be that difficult to emulate.

Also .. .Sega CD… You can easily take that system and put it on Gametap. It would be nice to see all of Working Designs RPG Games on Gametap…

  10. phorteetoo Says:

It can indeed be that difficult… people have been working on it for years with varying degrees of success.

And SegaCD… it’s interesting GT has every Sega console BUT that (I’m including Saturn cause it’s been announced, at least)… now I’m kinda curious why that is. :)

But it would indeed be outstanding…

Just don’t forget to get us Night Trap, please. (lol, and such)

Seriously though, if Lunar 1 & 2 ever hit GameTap, I’d buy like a 10 year subscription right then and there.

Ah, nostalgia, you vicious beast. :)

  11. Legolas813/Banjo4321 Says:

I hope the next update includes the ability to pause downloads, exit GameTap, and then resume downloads later. That is a feature really needed for larger games, since the download speed can be pretty slow at times from GameTap’s end.

  12. Jason Carver Says:

Although Gametap does not exhibit this behavior presently Legolas, Gametap does seem to take into consideration the chunk youve already downloaded even if it looks like its starting out from the beginning again. That is what I experienced.

  13. Legolas813/Banjo4321 Says:

^ I thought it might do that, but I couldn’t tell for sure.

  14. Jason Carver Says:

Yup…. Its silly. When I was a Comcast Games on Demand subscriber before moving over to Gametap, Extents player did just this.

  15. Jason Carver Says:

Okay now Gametap…. Im anxiously awaiting Thursday’s update when I awake from a long sleep dreaming about hockey ;)

  16. Legolas813/Banjo4321 Says:

I hope the version of Arkanoid coming out tomorrow has the level editor. I remember playing with that level editor for hours as a little kid in DOS.

  17. Jason Carver Says:

    You mean the C64 Version?

  18. Legolas813/Banjo4321 Says:

Well I think the Arkanoid I remember as a kid was the first one. I’m not sure what features are in Arkanoid II (the one coming to GameTap). I also don’t know if the C64 version was any different than the DOS one.

  19. Jason Carver Says:

The c64 version had a slightly bigger color palette and the sounds were better. A lot of arcade ports were on the c64. Time will only tell if Gametap will get them all.

  20. Legolas813/Banjo4321 Says:

Is it just me, or did the game count on the GameTap website go from 822 to 823 yesterday? Weird.

  21. Jason Carver Says:

823 is the correct count , if you include the Groove Champion Easter Egg.

  22. Jason Carver Says:

Okay the support site now says “Almost Here” For Vista. That could take a few days LOL…..

  23. oldbushie Says:

Yeah, I joined gametap a couple days ago in anticipation of Uru Live but Gametap wouldn’t install…. I can’t wait for Vista support. XD

  24. Rob Merritt Says:

I wish there was an easy way to figure out what the new games are for this week from the website.
