Do you want this here? Or away?
March 25th, 2008 by xamountTime for another “we’re curious” poll.
The here/away toggle in the Player’s mini-profile area. How useful is it to you? And if you do use it, why? When? We’d love it if you’d vote it up and then add your rationale to the comments section.

Do you use the here/away toggle?

I use it sometimes, but I generally forget that it’s there.
I dunno if this is related to what the poll is finding out, but I’d really like a function that automatically puts me as away after so many minutes (maybe 10). Also to automatically do it when I go into Windows games, since it’s annoying to get Challenges/IMs in the middle of those.

I don’t use the social networking functions of GameTap at all, including the here/away setting.

Mainly I just use it when I’m getting a few big games before taking a nap. But also (like buster42 alluded to) during windows games (previously in my case, marathon Heroes of Might and Magic sessions, although with Rock Band in the way those have been on the shelf for a while).

I don’t use it…. Mostly just my MOUL friends on there, and now with the closing, Most of them have transferred to my MSN and Skype accounts.

I don’t really ever use it. I’m just always there when I’m running the shell. It was used back when GTTV and all the media was incorporated.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Even though it looks like a good chunk of people don’t use it, we’re not removing the here/away toggle — just trying to figure out the best use of that valuable mini-profile real estate.
That said, buster42 found some stuff we didn’t know about. While you aren’t able to be challenged while in a Windows game (let me know if you can reproduce that), you do hear the “IM-received” sound. When we opened up the ability to IM an away/absent user, we ended up with some unintended side-effects.
It also looks like might have lost the auto-away timer somewhere along the way. Whoops. We’ll work it out so you don’t feel like you’re blowing people off.
